Fred James Brown, 88, formerly of Columbia, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at his home in Jamestown after a long illness.

Fred was born on April 16, 1934 in the Millerfield Community to George Alvin and Willa Belle Shepherd Brown. He grew up with a sister, Mildred Emerson and a brother, Buster Brown. As a young man he served in the US Army. Upon returning from the US Army, he attended Lindsey Wilson College. He went on to work for General Telephone of KY and retired with over 28 years of service.

At age 28, he married his wife of 59 years, Betty Bruton Brown. Together they served in many areas of Christian ministry. They were very active in their home church, Trinity United Methodist Church. Fred taught an adult Sunday School class for many years and Betty acted as his support. They were also active in the choir. They loved their church and served in many more roles during their years there. They were very active in the Gideon Organization and Uganda Counseling and Support Services. They were true servants of Christ.

Fred is survived by his two daughters, Beth Ann Johnson (Rodney) and Shelley Smith (Jonathan) both of Jamestown; four grandchildren, Macey Johnson Gosser (Dustin), Morgan Johnson, Colby Smith, and Jackson Smith; a sister-in-law, Nelda Bruton Dockins; four loving and devoted caregivers, Faye Cook, Adalene Cochran, Brenda Hernandez, and Diana Reece.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and wife.

Funeral service will be 2:00pm Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home with burial in Haven Hill Cemetery. Full Military Honors will be provided by VFW Post 6097. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Stott-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.

Rev. William Davenport and Rev. Steve Pescosolido will be officiating, and pallbearers will be Sammy Blair, Charles Cole, Steve McKinney, Rick Wilson, Wes Irvin and Louis McQueary.
