Welcome to Wednesday, good folks. Thanks for starting your day with us here at The County Line. It can surely only get better from here.
Today is National Senior Health and Fitness Day, which — even as unknown and uncelebrated as it is — is a cause that we can get behind. This faux holiday gets bonus points for being direct and properly named, unlike a few we’ve encountered this year.
In the spirit of old people being fit and active, and without further ado, our Quote of the Day:
“Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing.” – Redd Foxx
Wait, hold up. Sorry about that, while too good not to share, that one runs counter to today’s senior-health focused celebration. Now, the real quote of the day, from someone that seniors today probably remember: John F. Kennedy.
“Our growing softness, our increasing lack of physical fitness, is a menace to our security.”
This tells us two things. First of all, apparently, we as a society have been getting softer for a long time, considering Kennedy uttered these words six decades ago. It’s kind of ironic, given all we’ve learned about health, diet, and exercise since JFK’s era that we as a society are definitely softer than we were in the mid-20th century. Maybe it’s the lack of physically demanding jobs, or maybe it’s something else, but I doubt many would argue that we’re more fit in 2022 than 1962, especially if they’re familiar with current obesity rates in America.
Secondly, it tells us that all of us should be more cognizant of our fitness, regardless of age. While this writer is not yet a senior, I’m not as young as I used to be, and I can feel it. It seems to get just a little harder to get through a workout these days, and that trend will undoubtedly continue. Still, what’s the alternative? We all age, nothing we can do about that. We can work to slow the process though, to better enjoy our later years (or at least live to see old age), so here’s to encouraging all of us to do that work.
If we have any active, healthy seniors who read this site (and I’m positive that we do), I’d encourage them to share their tips with us. Just email countyline@adair-russell.com, and we’ll share your suggestions in a future post.
Let’s check in with the intern for today’s weather:
At 7 a.m., it’s partly cloudy and 69 degrees at company headquarters in Russell Springs. Intern correspondents in Jamestown and Columbia report near identical conditions, with thunderstorms a possibility for late afternoon and/or tonight across The County Line coverage area. Temperatures should hover around the upper 70s, with a high of around 82.
That’s all for now. As always, thanks for reading, and check back throughout the day for more fresh content, always from local voices.
