James Moody Hughes

Downey Eye Clinic

James Moody Hughes was born on February 16, 1954, in Columbia to Zachary Edward Hughes and Josephine Grady Hughes. James moved to Louisville in 1976, where he lived and worked until his transition. He worked for Phillip Morris until he retired in 2000. James married Ruth Anna Bridgewater in 1977, and they divorced in 1995.

James was a hardworking man who loved being with his family. He was determined to raise his children to be God-fearing, hardworking, conscious human beings. He even often offered “guidance” to his many nieces and nephews. Surely, they remember those times fondly. When he was younger, he liked to look and smell good just to get in his car and “go ridin’.”  He was the best ever at hide and seek, he loved rides in the country, boxing and basketball, riding motorcycles and telling stories about the old days and his ancestors. Though he was a disciplinarian, laughter was ever present in his presence. His laughter will be missed.

James passed away in his Louisville home on March 23, 2022. He is survived by: five children, Ahnuh Hughes of Atlanta, Georgia, Angie (Hughes) Johnson and husband Jerimiah, of Louisville, Felicia Artis and husband Walter of Atlanta, Georgia, James Isaac Hughes and wife Erin of Japan, and Michael Hughes of Atlanta, Georgia; three brothers, Merlin Duncan and wife Gale of Louisville, Samuel (Sammy) Hughes and wife Melissa of Columbia, Elisha (Clifford) Hughes and wife Mary of Louisville; two sisters, Justina (Hughes) Sanders and Artilla (Hughes) Cooper both of Louisville; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, 2022 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions, East Louisville Chapel, 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, Kentucky. A Celebration of Life will follow at 5:00 p.m.

The family requests guests to follow the recommended CDC guidelines. This obituary information is a courtesy of Grissom-Martin Funeral Home.
