For the second year in a row, Russell County High School junior Lucas McFall advanced to the second round of the boys’ singles state tennis tournament.

In the first round, McFall took down Whitson McNeill, who represents Paducah Tilghman and was the 1st Region runner-up, in straight sets. McFall won 6-0, 6-1 in the Round of 64 to advance to the Round of 32.

Next up, McFall took on Zachary Thompson, a freshman from Lafayette High School who was a semifinalist in the 11th region tournament.

McFall jumped out to a quick lead in the first set of his second match. He won the first two games and had a 3-1 advantage after four games.

By the end of six games, McFall was up 4-2, but a right wrist injury that he has had to keep wrapped during competition for the past few weeks reared its head at the most inopportune time.

Thompson won four straight games to take the first set 6-4. Even after getting his wrist re-wrapped between sets, McFall’s injury was too much to overcome, retiring after three games into the second set.

McFall was the 4th Region runner-up this year and won all-region honors prior to his run in the state tournament.
