Russell County High School junior Lucas McFall is set to open play in the opening round of the state tennis tournament this morning.

McFall will take on Paducah Tilghman’s Whitson McNeill at 7:45 a.m. CT at the University of Kentucky’s Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington.

McFall won 4th Region Tournament runner-up honors last week, while his opponent was the runner-up in the 1st Region. This will be McFall’s second consecutive year competing in the state tournament.

After making it to the second round of state last year, McFall is hoping to have an even better showing this year.

“I’m honestly going to try to get to the third or fourth round this year and try to improve on [last year],” McFall said after last week’s 4th Region tournament. “I’ve just got to start out a little hotter coming into state because everybody there’s going to be good. There’s no joking around there.”
