Junior Lucas McFall took home 4th Region runner-up honors on Tuesday after falling in the region tournament championship match.

McFall faced off against Greenwood junior Dylan Dethridge for the region title. The two had split their season series with one win apiece, but McFall had a slow start in Tuesday’s match and couldn’t recover.

McFall lost the first set 6-0 and looked to be on his way to losing the second set 6-0 as well. Down 5-0, he was able to get into a groove and won the next three games.

“I kind of felt like it was last game, last chance, and I had tried everything so I just thought, ‘I’m just going to make him win it. I’m not missing anything,’” McFall said. “That did end up working for a while until he got dialed back in, but yeah, that makes me feel a little better getting those three at the end.”

Dethridge took the next game to pick up the 6-0, 6-3 victory, and while McFall was disappointed with the outcome, he was still able to reflect on the significance of being region runner-up.

“I knew it was going to be between me and him,” McFall said. “I wanted to win it, but he’s just a better player right now. It’s still really cool to be second in the region, especially (being in the same region) with these Bowling Green schools.”

Next up for McFall is the state tournament, which will take place on Tuesday, May 31.

After making it to the second round of state last year, McFall is hoping to have an even better showing this year.

“I’m honestly going to try to get to the third or fourth round this year and try to improve on [last year],” McFall said. “I’ve just got to start out a little hotter coming into state because everybody there’s going to be good. There’s no joking around there.”

McFall’s opponent and match time have yet to be determined.
