The Russell County tennis teams had a strong showing against Monroe County on Monday, winning all four boys’ matches and going 6-3 on the girls’ side of competition.
For the boys’ team, Jay Bailey won 8-0, Jaxon Popplewell won 8-2, and Joe Bolen won 8-1. In doubles, Paxton Trautman and Carson Buras took their match by a score of 8-1.
For the girls’, four players won their individual matches: Ellie Terry won 6-2, Abby Helm won 8-6, Jasmin Grant won 6-0, and Grace Jennette won 6-0.
Jaylen Hilll lost 5-7 and Alexis Fox lost 0-2.
In doubles play, Ellie Terry and Abby Helm won 7-5, and Jasmin Grant and Grace Jennette won 6-0. Alexis Fox and Khole Stephens lost 3-6.
Coach Steven Kinder said he was proud of how the players are consistently improving each match.
“That’s the best thing about it, that they’re getting experience and playing better every week,” he said. “We as tennis coaches work to make sure it’s a positive experience for our players and that they’re learning the game. It’s more about the kids learning the game and having fun.”
